YMCA Past, Present & Future
YMCA History
In 1945, a group of dedicated citizens came together with a vision for improving the health of children and families in their community. The YMCA of Chatham-Kent began as a store-front operation, but by 1962 it had moved to its current facility on King Street.
Over the past 64 years, the YMCA’s programs and services have constantly evolved to meet the needs of the community. From health and wellness programming to youth day camps and employment education and training, the Chatham-Kent Y works to ensure that no person, especially youth, will be denied the opportunity to participate in its programs due to financial constraints. YMCA financial assistance enables youth, families and individuals who cannot afford the full cost of membership to access all programs and services.
Through the incredible dedication of our staff and volunteers, and the loyal support of donors, members, friends and community partners, the YMCA will continue to ensure that all Chatham-Kent residents can take advantage of our many resources.
Today’s YMCA
The YMCA of Chatham-Kent is committed to helping all members of our community reach their full potential. We offer a diverse range of programming, including health, wellness, fitness and recreation, youth day camps, licensed child care and after-school programs, employment education and training, and community outreach and newcomer services.
The YMCA is the largest provider of not-for-profit childcare in Canada. We operate three YMCA licensed childcare locations and six school-age sites throughout Chatham-Kent. We also offer youth employment initiatives in Blenheim, Wallaceburg and Chatham.
The YMCA is accessible to all, and we are dedicated to ensuring that no one is excluded from our services for financial reasons.
