FAQ
Read below for answers to some of the questions we get asked about the new YMCA. If you have a question you would like answered, email mlloyd@ymcaswo.ca.
Q: Why does Chatham-Kent need the YMCA?
A: The YMCA provides all Chatham-Kent residents with the tools they need to stay healthy in spirit, mind and body. Our state-of-the-art fitness facilities, community meeting space, and educational and employment resources help everyone in our community, regardless of physical ability or financial status, meet their full potential.
Q: Why did the YMCA need a new building?
A: Our new building will enable us to continue fulfilling our commitment to the people of Chatham-Kent. After more than 50 years of use, the King Street facility had aged to a point where it was no longer able to meet the needs of our growing community.
Q: What does the new building feature?
A: The new building features two pools, including one for lessons and endurance swims and one warm-water pool for seniors and people with limited mobility. A state-of-the-art fitness centre and gymnasium provide a full range of fitness equipment and ample space for classes. Community meeting facilities enables groups to gather in conference rooms and social spaces.
Q: Where is the new YMCA located?
A: The new YMCA is located just off of Grand Avenue West at 101 Courthouse Lane on the site of the former Thamesview Lodge. This central location is easily accessible by car or bus and will offer ample free parking.
Q: How much did it cost?
A: The new YMCA building cost approximately $17.4 million.
Q: Where will the money come from?
A: Funding for the new facility is coming from the YMCA ($1.5 M), the Municipality of Chatham-Kent ($2.5 M), the Provincial and Federal governments ($8.4 M), and our Community Capital Campaign ($5 M).
<Q: How can I help?
A: Make an investment in your community and become a part of the new YMCA today. Your donation will help us continue to build strong kids, strong families and strong communities.
